November 11
In Memory
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
We will remember them.
(The Ode of Remembrance is from Laurence Binyon’s poem For the Fallen)
Monday, November 11 is Veteran's Day in the United States (also Remembrance Day, Armistice Day). The date - among other things - commemorates the signing of the Armistice in 1918 that ended the fighting in the First World War. Remember on Monday that millions of people have given their lives - and even more families have been shattered by the aftermath of war.
To those who are serving and who have served - and their families - my thanks
Here are links to two poems by Rudyard Kipling about veterans -
*Tommy - http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/tommy/ - it is worth thinking about when someone complains about the the cost of veterans' benefits;
*The Last of the Light Brigade - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_of_the_Light_Brigade
*And if it is broadcast the film "The Best Years of Our Lives" presents some of the issues confronting veterans (and families) following World War II.
